Hayden - Harnett

Jamie Chang @ Wed, 09/03/2008 - 11:57am

Hayden-Harnett makes some of my favorite looking clothes and bags, at freakishly expensive price tags. I personally don't mind paying a lot of $ for clothes, as long as the $ is going around fairly. I wrote them an email, here's what they had to say:

My first email:

June 18th, 2008
Hello,
I'm interested in buying two jackets.
Can you please let me know where these were manufactured?
1- Gwenievere Wool Cape, Plaid
2- Anabella Hooded Wool Coat, Charcoal
Thank you, Jamie

Hi Jamie, thank you for contacting Hayden-Harnett, our products are made in China.
Thats including our handbags and apparels! If you have anymore inquiry, please feel free to contact me
via email or by phone.
Thank you -Employee's name

My response:

Hello,
Why are your products so expensive if they are made in China?
Thank you, Jamie Chang

Hayden-Harnett response:

Dear Jamie, our product is made in China However; our material does not come from China. Our leather comes from different tanneries all around Europe such as Italy and also from South America as well.

If you factor in the cost of the leather along with labor, shipping and handling of the goods, it can be very expensive to produce our products. If you have any further inquiry, please feel free to contact me via email or by phone.

thank you -Employee name

Hello,
Hum, well that explains some of the cost, but that still does not make a lot of sense to me, particularly because the average cost of a purse is about $450. I really don't mind spending a lot of money on products, but if I do, I like to know that they were made in countries with higher labor and environmental standards than China.

Anyway, thanks for the response.

Regards, Jamie Chang

yay, welcome back!

I bet you could buy that purse in china for like 25 bucks. It's kind of stupid for that company to outsource production to china, especially when quality is just not there.

I bet in 10-20 years or so, Chinese laborers will specialize and improve their quality and become not only cheap but desirable as well!

Hi Charles! I hope you're right.

For me, though, the quality of products are certainly a concern, but far more so are the overall global impacts of overseas production in the way that the United States has done for the last 40 years. Overseas production lowers costs for companies (like the ones in this blog), but the long term impact on the manufacturing nation's economic well being, the environment, the workers are the cost. For example, I remember a time when a Coach purse cost $300, but it was made in the United States and the quality was good. Nowadays, Coach purses are almost entirely produced in China. In China, Coach: 1) does little to contribute to Chinese infrastructure through contributions or taxes, that would typically be in effect here in the United State, 2) Chinese workers work all day and all night in dead end jobs that have little pay, little benefits, and little alternatives (high risk, low payoff for workers) and 3) the environmental standards are not the same overseas, and often, much worse than even the United States. So what does this mean for Coach? It means that Coach has managed to put a nasty little dent in the world, and in the process, has lowered their production costs. But does Coach pass on these lower production costs to us consumers? Of course not - they charge the same or more, and keep the profits for themselves so they can keep getting bigger and bigger. This is the problem - there is exploitation happening on multiple levels - the company is exploiting the consumer, the worker, the environment, and the list goes on.

If you want to chat about it, give me a call okay? I miss you!!

xox Jamie

You, my friend, are the most interesting person I have ever met!

Economics, Nature, Environmental Science... the list goes on:)

But I absolutely agree with what you are saying! More and more companies like Coach are taking advantage of globalization, and what will happen when China/India demands more pay? I can relate to the negative impacts of outsourcing labor as well... my aunt's best friend just lost his job @ dow jones because they are outsourcing his whole dept. to India =/ And because he lost his job @ dow jones, I lost my connection there :( oh well, hopefully Merrill Lynch will pick me up, haha!

thanks for doing this research -- I was set on an HH bag but I also will not buy things that are made in China. This is so frustrating, I want to support smaller businesses but it seems like EVERYTHING is made in China these days!
